My Father's Business - Part I: Called to Heavenly Work

Witness and evangelism are tasks that are part of a lifetime appointment.

We are not odd-job men, employed by God as casual labour when we have nothing better to do. God does not call on us by chance; ours is a “heavenly calling” (Hebrews 3:1).

The 12-year-old Jesus went missing from the party of pilgrims on a visit to Jerusalem. As you can imagine, his parents hunted for him high and low. When they finally found him, his mother Mary said, “Your father and I have been frantic, searching for you everywhere.” Jesus seemed surprised. “Why did you need to search?” he asked. “Didn’t you know that I had to be about my Father’s business” (Luke 2:48-49). Then he went back home with his parents to be about Joseph’s business as a tektonos, a word which is usually translated as “carpenter”. As far as we know, he spent the next 18 years as a humble workman. And you know, God was pleased about that! He expressed his delight at the beginning of Christ’s ministry saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:16). What was Jesus’ secret? It was simply that he was always “about his Father’s business” even when he was actually doing Joseph’s business. As Paul wrote to slaves to tell them, “It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:22-24). Whatever we do for a living, our true career is our Father’s business no matter what it might look like onthe surface.
